The Westpac Airpoints Business Mastercard

Helping you separate business and personal spending, the Westpac Airpoints Business Mastercard allows you to earn Airpoints Dollars and Status Points on your business expenditure, with some nice perks on the side. Extras include overseas travel insurance, purchase protection and extended warranty, Koru membership discounts, and up to 44 days interest free on purchases.

What we love...

One of the most appealing features on the Westpac Airpoints Business Mastercard is that it allows cardholders to separate their business spending from their personal spending. This can make it easier to track business transactions, while making reporting expenditure simpler. You can even arrange for your accountant to receive your transaction data electronically via BankLink.

But that’s not all. With this card in your wallet, you can get something back on your business spending, as you earn Airpoints Dollars and Status Points on all eligible purchases. You will earn 1 Airpoints Dollar for every $75 spent on the card, and 1 Status Point per $225. The Airpoints Dollars you earn can be redeemed for flights and upgrades with Air New Zealand and its partners, or to treat yourself with gift cards and merchandise from the Airpoints Store.

As for Status Points, they allow you to climb the membership ladder within the Airpoints programme, taking you to Silver, Gold and then Elite status. Each tier provides more perks, which can include lounge access, upgrades, additional baggage allowances, priority check-in, frequent flyer seating, hotel vouchers and more.

If you like the sound of those benefits but don’t earn enough Status Points to climb the tiers, you may be interested in Koru membership. With this card, you can get $145 off the cost of membership each year to enjoy benefits such as lounge access for you and a guest, priority check-in and boarding, complimentary frequent flyer seating, baggage privileges and more.

Another important feature offered on this card is insurance cover. As long as you use your card to cover the minimum spend requirement on your travel booking, you could benefit from up to 35 days of overseas travel insurance for you and your family travelling with you. On top of that, you can enjoy additional cover on your purchases, with extended warranty and purchase protection.

And cost? The annual account fee is not insignificant, so you will need to make the most of your spending to enjoy value on the rewards you earn. However, you can add an additional cardholder to the account for a small fee to boost your points earning – and the value of the rewards you get in return. If you happen to have a personal Westpac Airpoints Platinum Mastercard, you will pay no account fee on the Westpac Airpoints Business Mastercard.

What’s not so great...

All credit cards can help you manage your money more effectively, but you have to choose the right card for your spending and repayment habits. Given this card’s relatively high purchase rate and cash advance rate, it would not suit cardholders who carry a balance. Carrying a balance means paying interest, which would make it hard to find any real value on rewards earned.

Why should you choose this card?

If you are a small business owner who needs a credit card to separate business and personal spending, the Westpac Airpoints Business Mastercard could be an excellent choice – especially if you tend to pay off your balance each month and want to earn rewards on your business purchases.

As long as you don’t have a balance transfer on your account, and you clear your balance each month, you could benefit from up to 44 days interest free on purchases. This could offer an easy way to manage your business cash flow month to month.

Aside from all the features mentioned above, the card offers all the standard extras, such as contactless payments, 24-hour credit card emergency assistance, internet and mobile banking, and all the security basics you’d expect from a big bank card.

Overall Rating

The Westpac Airpoints Business Mastercard is a business card that allows cardholders to earn Airpoints Dollars and Status Points on their business spending, while benefitting from a range of extras, including overseas travel insurance, retail cover, Koru membership discounts, and up to 44 days interest free on purchases.
